Write a Book in a Day Competition
On Tuesday 17 June, 45 Kilbreda students from all year levels, formed six teams to participate in the 2025 Competition in the Kilbreda Library. As well as being able to win prizes for writing and illustrating a book, the students have contributed to the Kid鈥檚 Cancer Project, both in funds raised and the contribution of their books for children to enjoy while undergoing cancer treatment.
With a word count limit of 5,000 words, the students had to weave in characters like 鈥榤ountain guides鈥�, non-human characters like 鈥榣lamas鈥� and random words like 鈥檊ooey鈥� and 鈥榟omework鈥�. The enthusiasm and creative energy from the students was infectious, especially the burst of excitement and anticipation when the students received their parameters followed by the buzz of the teams working hard in such a fun and productive atmosphere.
Thank you to all the wonderful staff that supported the WABIAD Competition, and the enthusiastic students for making this day so valuable and memorable!
Year 9 Cultural Experience
Early this term, Year 9 students experienced a cultural performance from the award-winning author, musician, storyteller and now filmmaker, Boori Monty Pryor, to underpin their curriculum learning in 鈥楢boriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture鈥�.
Boori shared his unique perspective on the world. Combining humorous tales from his life experiences, Dreamtime stories and instructive anecdotes, the presentation was an insight into the multi-faceted reality of modern-day Indigenous culture. Boori punctuates his storytelling with the music, dances and language of his family and his home. By combining traditional elements of performance with his contemporary stories, Boori helps students better understand both the past and present culture of First Nations People.

鈥淗aving Monty visit was a great experience that I enjoyed; it was so engaging, fun and interesting to learn and explore how Aboriginal dance tells stories from long ago over many generations and how important it is to learn Aboriginal culture.鈥�
鈥淏oori Monty Pryor was full of life as he described stories passed on from generations, teaching us how he and his ancestors shared stories through dance and song.鈥�
鈥淚 liked how the experience allowed people to get involved. I also liked the fact that we learned how actions and songs were used to tell stories of real-life scenarios, which in turn would teach other people about the experiences.鈥�
